L'Etude

While a vital component of visual art is inspiration, creativity and original vision, also fundamental to the process is skill and technical precision. The discipline of studying from life, be it the human figure or still life objects, is imperative for the artist to improve and inform and enrich their work.

The human figure is a complex object that teaches the artist a variety of essential techniques; form, curve, line and subtle undulations that we find in nature too. I find the practice of life drawing of paramount importance to my study and practice of art. For me, it is a deeply mindful experience that grounds me, like meditation, it feels like it presents me an insight into other parts of my practice and my journey with my work. The focus of life drawing is only in the process and the learning, it illuminates and enriches my painting and my experience.
